  • This Bourg district is on the right bank slopes of the river Gironde. Merlot-dominated, this is a fine example of attention to detail and top class biodynamic wine making. Lots of plummy, spicy fruit, backed up by some oak ageing giving it fine length and plenty of aftertaste. If this is what chateau-bottled organic tastes like, let's have more of it.. the cedary nose has a distinctively grand whiff about it, suggesting a wine at more than twice the price. It's an elegant, roundly mature and middleweight claret drinking very well now more...

  • Philippe Pacalet is a vigneron of the young generation in Burgundy. He is 41, was formerly estate manager at the Domaine Prieuré Roch (until 1999), he now rents a collection of vineyard plots in the Beaune area and expertly vinifies his natural wines in 3 differents chais a few kilometers from each other. His wines are now widely appreciated, in France and abroad. His viticulture philosophy is close to biodynamic principles, but he prefers not to follow fixed rules or integrate any official certification organization. more...

  • Nose: Intense nose of minerals (wet stone), hanging meat, white pepper and much more, all tightly knitted together and bursting to escape. Palate: Good integration of rich fruit and alcohol floods the palate allowing dark chocolate and spice characters to ripple out like a stone in a pond. • A blend of the high and low slopes of Arlettes, Mazards and Reynards, Mathieu Barret now uses fewer stalks in the fermentation process for this wine, employing only 10-15% whole bunches and adds the press wine from Brise Caillou and Billes Noires. This is most impressively the best Terrasses du Serre Mathieu has yet made, parading a wonderful array of ripe, suave black cherry and wild bramble fruits, silky sweet, powerful tannins, and a tempering, complex mineral elements. Deeply concentrated, fine, ripe and with a truely uplifting finish, this has everything. more...

  • (RP 90) From the high up Arlettes vineyard, this cuvée is fermented without any stalks. Incredibly intense and tight-packed, this shows deep concentration and complexity, really cooling, fresh mineral flavours, notes of red cherry, cherry stone and blackcurrant held together by a firm, ripe tannic backbone. A startling wine, built for the long term. more...

  • (RP 91) An equal part blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre is the 2006 Cotes du Rhone-Villages Les Trois Cepages. This wine reveals terrific fruit, a dark ruby/purple color, plenty of pepper, cassis, cherries, and some chocolate and meatiness in a rich, full-bodied, opulent style. Proprietor Daniel Boulle has a large estate in Travaillon (not far from Gigondas) of approximately 135 acres, all biodynamically farmed, with yields very low. My first exposure to him was his brilliant 1999s, followed by several good vintages, but then hard times followed with 2002 and especially 2003. He has bounced back very strongly with a brilliant line-up in 2006, no doubt thanks to the consulting advice of the brilliant Philippe Cambie. more...

  • (RP 91) Just as sumptuous is the 2006 Cotes du Rhone Vieilles Vignes, which is 100% Grenache. There are Rayas-like raspberry and cherry notes intermixed with loamy, sandy notes in the background. There is some garrigue, pepper, and licorice, but the raspberry and cherry fruit flavors dominate this medium to full-bodied, seductive wine. It is best drunk over the next 3-4 years. • (RP 90) Distilled herbal essences, roses, and kirsch waft from the glass of Barmes' 2004 Gewurztraminer Steingrubler. A liqueur-like palate impression - supported by sweetness - confirms the richness, glossiness, and intensity of this quite refined wine's personality. But a sappy, juicy finish lends itself to a very elegant overall impression, with subtle smokiness and persistent rose perfume. The ripe concentration and uncanny balance of this wine should serve it well for 7-10 years in one's cellar. more...

The domaine now consists of 32 hectares of vines in the Arbois and Côtes de Jura appellations, with parcels in some of the best sites. Perhaps because of the implementation of biodynamie, work here is labour intensive: there are 15 full time employees. Use of sulfur dioxide is minimized. more...

  • A Coulée de Serrant is different from all the other white wines in the world. It is a true monument, and leaves no one cold. The grapes come from the steepest and best site with the oldest vines. They are a gleaming gold, with exotic aromas of a particular clarity, and added to this is a complex mineral, spicy and nutty bouquet with honey and butter nuances. It is very rich and full-bodied, well-balanced, and has the rare feeling of a nice fruity sweetness. Its finish is endless and impressive. You can wait some time before drinking this wine; it will drink well between 2010 and 2020 at a temperature of between 13 and 14 degrees and should be decanted for several hours before serving. more...
