The History
After wrapping up his winemaking training in 1991, H.O. Spanier founded Battenfeld Spanier with a clear focus on organic practices right from the start.
For Spanier, the soil’s health is at the heart of everything. Nurturing its microbial life is crucial to showcasing both the past and future through his wines. His true passion? Riesling.
The Philosophy
As a proud member of the "Académie Internationale du Vin," Spanier is part of a global circle dedicated to the study of noble wines. His winemaking philosophy balances intervention and inaction, reason and risk—every year brings something new, and sometimes intuition trumps everything he’s learned.
To Spanier, grapes are storytellers of the Wonnegau’s southern limestone-rich soils. He’s driven by the minerality and saltiness that stretch beyond the usual fruit flavours, creating wines with depth, complexity, and a unique sense of place.
