The History
Muscadet’s Domaine de l’Ecu has always been ahead of its time. In the early 70s, fresh out of mandatory army service in France where he spent the majority of his time on a farm reading about organics, Guy Bossard returned home to his father’s vineyards in Le Landreau, a hamlet located in Sevre et Maine, and quickly took over. He founded Domaine de l’Ecu and the 23ha estate was certified as Organic in 1975 and later on as Biodynamic in 1988.
In 2009 Guy began working with lawyer turned aspiring winemaker Fred Niger to whom he later sold his estate to.
The Philosophy
Under the direction of Fred, the Domaine continues to produce stunning, terroir driven (often soil type specific) cuvées in Muscadet as well as a line of wines (Love & Grapes) using purchased fruit from like-minded growers throughout France which are fermented in a combination of amphora and old barrels.
Fred continues to farm Organically and Biodynamically and is ‘fanatical’ and personally ever-present in the vineyards. In his cellar, he is just as specific and meticulous having renounced machinery for movements (only using gravity to rack or move when deemed absolutely necessary). Fred and Guy’s vision and endless collaborations with fellow vignerons have earned them places in the wine world’s most adventurous and respected circles.
