The History
Gober & Freinbichler have been on a mission since 2016: crafting Blaufränkisch that isn’t weighed down by heavy oak, excess alcohol, or overpowering extraction—pretty rare in their region, apart from folks like Franz Weninger or Roland Velich (Moric). They started with just 1.5 hectares but were always on the lookout for more vineyards, either renting or taking over from Dominik’s parents.
As for the vineyards, 40% are in Neckenmarkt, higher up on slopes with rocky slate or limestone soils, and 60% are in their hometown of Horitschon, where it’s all about clay. It’s a distinct split that adds even more character to their wines.
The Philosophy
By 2018, they made the switch to organic farming. Since Dominik’s parents retired, some vineyards are still in the process of conversion, but most of them are now certified organic (Austria Bio Garantie).
Fast forward to 2019, their garage cellar was bursting at the seams, so they built a new fermentation and storage hall. Grapes are hand-picked into small crates, sorted, and fermented spontaneously in open vats. They destem 100% of the grapes, punch down just once a day to keep things elegant, and age in large oak barrels—any smaller barrels come from their famous neighbours, who refresh their stock every four years.
