Founded in 2003 by Harald Thiel and family Hidden Bench's estate winery lies nestled in the heart of the picturesque Beamsville Bench. They craft premium wines using only certified organic estate fruit with sustainable, non-interventionist winemaking techniques, that have a sense of place.

The History

As both grape growers and wine makers, Hidden Bench believes that the limestone rich, clay based, glacial till soils of their three estate vineyards, all situated on the Beamsville Bench itself, permit them to produce complex and mineral driven wines. Hidden Bench's old-world style wines are age worthy and have a definitive sense of place and time.

Hidden Bench’s varietal focus is Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Riesling. In addition, they also produce limited quantities of their white Meritage, Nuit Blanche, and their red Meritage, Terroir Cache and a traditional method sparkling wine, Natur. Their 3 estate vineyards permit a current total production of approximately 120,000 bottles.

The Philosophy

Hidden Bench's quality standards are such that they will only bottle wines which they believe merit their name. This uncompromising pursuit of quality was exemplified by the 2004 vintage, during which they declassified the total production and sold the unfinished wine in bulk, as they did not believe that the wines merited the Hidden Bench name. Although a costly decision, they believe it was reflective of their values and a good example of their uncompromising commitment to quality.

Since 2010 Hidden Bench has been farming their low yield vineyards based on organic and biodynamic principles and all of their vineyards have been certified organic by Procert since 2013. Hidden Bench's vineyard teams attention to detail throughout the season, from pruning in late winter to hand harvest in the fall, is why we are able to consistently harvest extraordinary grapes which produce great wines.
