Benchmark Morgon

Today Domaine Lapierre is widely considered one of the reference estates of Morgon and one of the most influential producers in the modern history of Beaujolais.

From its home in Villié-Morgon, with vineyards rooted in the granitic slopes of the Côte du Py, the domaine has long demonstrated the depth, structure, and ageability of Gamay.

The Origin:
Marcel Lapierre (1950–2010)

Marcel was not just a grower in Morgon. He was one of the central figures in the revival of Beaujolais in the 1980s. In the late 70s and early 80s, Beaujolais was drifting toward industrialization, using cultured yeasts, heavy sulphur, carbonic caricatures, volume over site.

Guided by the teachings of Jules Chauvet, Marcel helped re-establish Morgon as a serious cru capable of great depth and longevity. Alongside Foillard, Breton, and Thévenet, he became part of what would later be known as the “Gang of Four,” drawing global attention to terroir-driven Gamay. The Beaujolais they created remain among the most sought-after styles by wine industry insiders.

By the late 1990s, Lapierre had become a global reference for Morgon. When Marcel passed in 2010, the philosophy was already embedded in both vineyard and cellar.

The Estate Today:
Mathieu & CAmille Lapierre

Mathieu joined the estate in 2004 and worked closely with his father before assuming co-leadership after 2010. He and his sister Camille co-own and co-operate the domaine, carrying Marcel’s legacy forward together. Under Mathieu’s direction, there has been increased precision in sorting and élevage, bringing greater consistency while preserving the energy, transparency, and vitality that define the wines.

Recently Mathieu divides time between Beaujolais and Montreal, where his wife is originally from and maintains the estate’s strong connection to both European and North American markets.

The Origin:
Marcel Lapierre (1950–2010)

Camille joined the estate around 2013 and now plays an active role in production, vineyard decisions, and international representation. She is deeply involved in cellar work and blending, including shaping cuvées (such as Cuvée Camille!) and her presence reinforces generational continuity within the framework established by Marcel. She also plays a key role in communicating the estate’s philosophy globally, keeping it relevant to younger markets and sommeliers.

The wines remain benchmarks for traditional Morgon. Whole cluster fermentations, semi-carbonic maceration, and minimal sulphur preserve vivid fruit while allowing the granitic terroirs to show through. At their best, they combine lifted red fruit, floral aromatics, bright acidity, and a savoury mineral backbone, with the capacity to evolve for a decade or more.
