Caroline, an Austrian-trained biologist, and Jan, a German geologist, met in Tuscany, fell in love, and chose to make their life in Montalcino. They arrived without vineyards to inherit or a famous Brunello name behind them. If they wanted to understand Sangiovese, they had to begin where every great grower eventually does: in the vineyard. 

For the next three decades, they learned how Sangiovese responds to soil, elevation and exposure, one parcel at a time. It is this curiosity that shapes Pian dell'Orino today.

The deepest expression from estate parcels on Montalcino’s southeastern slopes.
100% Sangiovese Grosso from estate parcels on the southeastern slopes of Montalcino, including Scopeta, Cancello Rosso, and Bassolino di Sopra, planted between 320 and 500 m on clay-calcareous marl and flysch soils. Spontaneous fermentation in concrete with three weeks of maceration, followed by nearly four years of ageing in large oak barrels.

Expect aromas of wild berries, dried cherry, violets, and Mediterranean herbs unfold into layers of spice, blood orange, leather, and graphite. Firm yet silky tannins give structure to a long, mineral finish.

From biodynamically farmed parcels bordering Biondi-Santi's Il Greppo, this Rosso is made with the same care as the estate's Brunello. 

Planted between roughly 320 and 400m on limestone, marl, sandstone and marine influenced soils. Spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts and gentle extraction, followed by ageing in large neutral Stockinger casks to preserve purity and structure. Bottled without fining or filtration.

Expect lifted aromas of sour cherry, blood orange, red currant and rose, layered with dried herbs, crushed stone and subtle spice. The palate is vibrant and linear with firm yet polished tannins, bright acidity and a mineral finish that carries length and finesse.

The freshest expression of the estate's Sangiovese. From the youngest vineyards, experimental plots, and cooler-exposure zones of the estate. Soils are composed of calcareous clay, blue-grey limestone, and Pliocene marl.

Fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged for 17–18 months in large oak barrels. Bright red cherry, plum skin, and wild herbs lead to notes of crushed violets and blood orange. The palate is vibrant and mineral with a saline edge and supple tannins.
