Critics consistently describe Pian dell’Orino as one of the most terroir faithful and elegant producers in Montalcino.

Founded in the late 1990s by Caroline Pobitzer and Jan Hendrik Erbach, Pian dell’Orino sits immediately next to Biondi Santi’s historic estate in one of Montalcino’s coolest, most ventilated sectors. From the outset the goal was precision through ecology, leading to early conversion to organic farming and then full Demeter certified biodynamics.

Today, Pian dell’Orino remains fully independent, run by its founders with a focus on terroir fidelity and long term ecological stewardship.

Biodynamics as a tool for transparency, not ideology.

Permanent cover crops, plant based teas and biodynamic preparations maintain healthy microbial activity, while chemical inputs are entirely excluded.

The parcels sit on limestone, marl, sandstone and marine influenced soils, factors that naturally preserve acidity and shape the estate’s signature tension and aromatic precision.

In the cellar, Erbach vinifies with native yeasts, long but gentle macerations and strictly neutral large format Stockinger casks to avoid stylistic imprint. Extraction is controlled and sulphur additions are minimal.
